With the newly minted title of Pope Emeritus- maybe both?
There are fairly strong arguments for both positions, but with the currently evolving situation at the Vatican, is it possible that both are true?
The antichrist will apparently be gay: The Pope Emeritus is rumored to have a live-in boyfriend.

Council of Trent declared that 'even those priests who are living in mortal sin
exercise the same function of forgiving sins as ministers of Christ', and it
pronounced a curse on 'those who say that priests in mortal sin have not the power
of binding and loosing'. The Church, in fact, declared in other words that the
most immoral man, if a priest, holds the place of the Saviour Himself when he
says: 'I absolve thee.')

The False Prophet will point to the Antichrist as the legitimate world leader (Rev.13-11-13)....the Popes have claimed that title for centuries. For one who claims that title to point to another who claims that title presented some philosophical and theological problems. This new situation may clear all that up.
I have believed for many years that the False Prophet would be the PopeFrom the Catholic News Service-online:

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- When Pope Benedict XVI comes to the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington for an early-evening interfaith prayer service April 17, 2008 with Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and representatives of other religions, space will be at a premium. There will be room for only about 200 people, according to Father James Massa, executive director of the U.S. bishops' Secretariat of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. Of those, about 50 will be reserved for Catholics, he added, with the rest allotted to representatives of the non-Christian religions participating in what is expected to be a 45-minute service. Among those expected to be invited are representatives of major religious organizations that either work with the Catholic Church in areas of common interest or are in dialogue with Catholic representatives. The pope also with gather with leaders from other Christian denominations at an ecumenical prayer service at a Catholic church in New York April 18.
Within a few weeks of the election of
Benedict XVI, the new Pope selected Levada to head the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith, the body that guards against heresy in the Church.
Levada became the highest ranked American prelate in Catholic history, and is
now a member of the College of Cardinals – with a vote in the next Papal
Conclave. Levada invited a group of URI leaders to accompany him to Rome for
his March 2006 installation, and the URI delegation said that they were the
first interfaith delegation ever to attend a consistory of Cardinals.
The meaning of all this is clear:
the top leaders of the Catholic Church now tolerate or favor this movement, and will not act
to disassociate the Church from it.
I also believed the leader of the EU or specifically the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy which was Javior Solana, but currently Catherine Ashton, would turn out to be the antichrist, but that is playing out rather badly. Or at least not as strongly as I once believed.
Argument for the Pope being the antichrist:
As Martin Luther grew in his appreciation of the gospel, he also grew in his recognition that the Papacy is the Antichrist. A 1954 WELS pamphlet entitled Antichrist put it this way: "It was because Luther cherished the Gospel so dearly that his faith instinctively recoiled and protested in unmistakable terms when the Pope put himself in the place of Christ and declared His work insufficient and in vain. That is the use to which Luther's faith put the prophecy of Scripture. For him the tenet that the Pope is the Antichrist was an article of faith."
Luther left no doubt where he stood concerning the Papacy when he wrote, "This teaching [of the supremacy of the pope] shows forcefully that the Pope is the very Antichrist, who has exalted himself above, and opposed himself against Christ, because he will not permit Christians to be saved without his power, which, nevertheless, is nothing, and is neither ordained nor commanded by God. This is, properly speaking, to exalt himself above all that is called God. . . . The Pope, however, prohibits this faith, saying that to be saved a person must obey him" (Smalcald Articles, II, IV, 10-12).
In the centuries after Luther's death, Lutherans accepted this confessional statement without reservation or qualification. In the 1860s, however, doubts about this confessional statement were raised within Lutheranism. They arose from the Iowa Synod, which refused to grant doctrinal status to the teaching that the Papacy is the Antichrist. They listed this teaching under the category of "open questions." The Missouri Synod took the lead, at that time, in defending the view of the Lutheran Confessions that the prophecies of Antichrist have been fulfilled in the Papacy.

Keep vigilant, watch closely. Some believe the throne of Peter will soon move to Jerusalem, and will still have a throne in the Vatican. See Here. The Pope Emeritus will stay in the Vatican city, while the soon coming pope may have a move in the future with the new status upgrade with Israel!
Just found this other site declaring that the New Jerusalem Initiative makes Old Jerusalm the 2nd Vatican State to be estabished.
